A LOVELY AND INSPIRING TRIP TO THE PAST
The Vital Few: The Entrepreneur and American Economic Progress
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (May, 1986)
Average review score:

History isn't shaped by abstract forces but by individuals. This book examines the role of prominent Americans in economic development. Hughes divides American economic history into the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries and selects 2 individuals from each era who had shaped their respective eras. For each character study, Hughes describes his or her achievements and how society adjusted to them. This book, written to fill a gap in the field of economics that too often stresses the importance of impersonal factors, is an inspiration to prospective entrepreneurs.

The Voice of Free Earth
Published in Paperback by One Horse Rhino (15 December, 1999)

Touching and honest, a great book club selection.I was very involved with the characters of Christopher and Doc Beale. I guess they were just so real. I felt like I knew them from a hundred other people I have known. Nice job!
I found it remarkable that you dealt with the issue of abuse with so much honesty. It also seemed to be value free which would be very difficult to do. My own experiences (old social work and mental health worker days) have allowed me to dig in to some of those kinds of relationships. I was so surprised that you were able to reflect the depth of those relationships. I found myself feeling like I was sitting across the room hearing what the characters were thinking during several episodes (the dinner scene, accident scene etc.). I was quite moved.
Finally, great writing. It read smoothly, nice flow. I never got "lost" We (My book club) usually keep flow charts on the Russian novels, ha! It was what we would call "a good read". I can't wait to share it at my next book club meeting in September.

W. Eugene Smith: Shadow and Substance: The Life and Work of an American Photographer
Published in Hardcover by Jim Hughes (October, 1989)
Average review score:

Shadow and SubstanceI would recommend the biography of W. Eugene Smith, Shadow and Substance: The Life and Work of an American Photographer to anyone interested in the life and times of this photographer. I felt that the author drew a picture of a driven, artist who had a sense of public right and wrong. From this book, I learned that whether or not he led a life that I would want my children to emulate, his sense of outrage towards social injustices were larger than his personal being. And, he presented his stories "up close" and personal. After reading the book, the photo essays became even more revolutionary and engaging. Smith becomes real. Enjoy.

What Your Handwriting Reveals
Published in Paperback by Wilshire Book Co (December, 1978)
Average review score:

Quintessential Read for Beginning Handwriting AnalystsThe brevity of this book in combination with its definition of every stroke you write and what it tends to say about you is amazing. It begins with a small history of handwriting analysis and notes on character and personality, then it goes into each nuance of writing style from direction of slant to size, shape, consistency, speed, flourish, and more. Then it details how to put it all together and interpret the "style" of ones' handwriting. This book is also full of very helpful illustrations that are not put down as absolutes, but merely guides to help you find what to look for. All in all, I'd say this is probably one of my favorite books and I am constantly re-reading it simply because it is so enjoyable to watch the mind of Mr. Hughes at work.

When We Went to the Park

What a great little book!A simple story of a girl and her grandfather and what they saw & did on the way to the park. Hughes' illustrations, as usual, are wonderful. My daughter just loves the interaction of the girl and her grandad. A great little treasure!

White House World: Transitions, Organization, and Office Operations (Joseph V. Hughes, Jr., and Holly O. Hughes Series in the Presidency and leaDership Studies, No. 13)
Published in Paperback by Texas A&M University Press (February, 2003)
Average review score:

A worthy glimpse of the workings of American governmentCompiled and edited by Martha Joynt Kumar (Department of Political Science, Towson University) and Terry Sullivan (Department of Political Science, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill), The White House World: Transitions, Organization, And Office Operations is an imposing collection of scholarly essays by a variety of learned authors. Drawing from interviews with seventy-five former senior White House officials representing six administrations (as well as with former President Gerald Ford), to present a picture as assembled by top political scientists of what really goes on in the White House West Wing, The White House World would well serve future White House administrations seeking practical advice on how best to organize their presidencies. Topics scrutinized include the mechanics of Presidential transition, the role of various offices such as Press Secretary or The Office of Communication, and a special focus upon President George W. Bush's transition. A worthy glimpse of the workings of American government itself, The White House World is an invaluable contribution to Political Science reference collections and reading lists.

The Wise Woman/Gutta Percha Willie
Published in Hardcover by Johannesen (March, 2000)
Average review score:

Also known as The Lost PrincessThis book is definitely worth reading for people of all ages. Its contents are thought provoking and life changing. In this story, a wise woman intervenes in the lives of two very spoiled girls. They are spoiled in different ways, and come from very different backgrounds: one is a princess, and one is a shepherd's cherished daughter. The wise woman takes these girls and gives them a chance to change. It is exciting to read and find out who will change for the better.
This book (even though it's by a totaly different author) makes a great companion to the "Mrs. Sharp's" Victorian books by Sarah Ban Breathnach, such as "Sarah Ban Breathnach's Mrs. Sharp's Traditions: Reviving Victorian Family Celebrations of Comfort and Joy." (also highly recommended!)
Books such as these are charming reminders of a simpler way of life, when families were closer than they are today. If you are a gardener, and long for the old-time ways, this book is for you. If you are NOT a gardener, but love old-time things, then you'll love perusing through this stunnig book, and dreaming of long-ago days when life was simpler, small joys were treasured, and people took time to drink in the beauty of nature.
